Seven persons, including four women, were killed and 48 others received serious burn injuries up to 80 per cent in a series of LPG cylinder explosions that accidentally went off at a marriage home at Bhungra village in the Jodhpur district last night.

Such was the intensity of the blast that three persons were blown away in the night while four others succumbed to burns at the MG Hospital in Jodhpur, Superintendent of Police-Rural Anil Kayal told SNS on Friday evening.

As many as 48 burn patients, of whom 15 are critical, are under treatment at the MG hospital, the SP said, adding the casualty figure may go up.

The mishap took place before the groom’s procession (Ghurchari and Baraat) was about to set off from the home in the evening.

A wedding evening turned into a horrible scene of grief and chaos when two children died after six cylinders kept for preparing food for the event exploded at the house. Portions of the rooms also collapsed or developed cracks due to the explosion.

Over 150 guests were present for the marriage ceremony at the house of one Takhat Singh at the time of the mishap. The police suspect it to be a case of gas leak that filled the adjoining room. As the gas was ignited accidentally the other cylinders went off ripping off the entire house, according to the Shergarh police station.

Early on Friday, the Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot visited the MG Hospital to inquire about the condition of fire victims.

Talking to the local media, Gehlot said an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh would be given to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs one lakh to the injured along with free treatment.

A special team of experts will also be coming to Jodhpur to assist the local hospital doctors, specially in burn unit, Gehlot said.
