The Central government is said to be planning a major relaxation in the renewal norms for Pollution Under Control Certificates (PUCC) for Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) vehicles.

The latest move is aimed at reducing compliance burdens on the owners of newer and cleaner vehicles, NDTV reported.

As per the report, the proposal aims to extend the PUCC validity for new BS-VI private vehicles from one year to three years.

If this gets approved, then owners of all the BS-VI private cars will be required to renew their pollution certificates only twice during the first six years of the vehicle’s life rather than getting them renewed annually.

The proposed framework looks forward to allow BS-VI private vehicles up to six years old to enjoy a three-year PUCC validity period. However, for vehicles between six and 10 years, the owners will need to have annual renewals. Further, cars older than 10 years would need to renew their certificates every six months.

Besides this, the government is reportedly considering separate norms for commercial BS-VI vehicles.

For commercial vehicles up to six years old, the PUCC validity might get extended to two years, while the same renewal schedule applicable to private vehicles would come into effect after that.
