BJP leader Dilip Ghosh on Saturday accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of spreading misinformation about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and attempting to protect Bangladeshi immigrants to retain their vote bank.

Ghosh said that Abhishek Banerjee had earlier opposed the SIR process and even asked the Election Commission to leave the country, but is now frequently changing his stance. He alleged that after facing defeat in Bihar, the TMC is now trying to provoke people in West Bengal.

Ghosh claimed that TMC’s efforts would fail since the public is well-informed. “Everyone will take part in the SIR process, but TMC is attempting to shield Bangladeshi immigrants because removing them from the voter list would make it harder for the party to win,” he said.

He further accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party of spreading misinformation to malign the SIR exercise. “They are trying to defame the process by spreading rumours, but people understand it’s a routine procedure and won’t be misled by such tactics,” Ghosh added.

Earlier, on October 29, 2025, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came down heavily on the BJP and the Election Commission of India after a 57-year-old person in North 24-Parganas committed suicide after failing to bear the anxiety following the declaration of pan-India SIR.

Pradip Kar, a resident of Mahajyoti Nagar in Panihati in North 24-Parganas, committed suicide after failing to bear the stress and anxiety after the implementation of SIR was declared.

After the intense SIR of electoral rolls, the Election Commission of India on Monday declared phase two of the SIR in 12 states and union territories. The announcement was made by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar at a press conference.

Reflecting on Bihar SIR, the CEC stated that the first phase of the SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar was completed without a single appeal.
