Ahead of the crucial assembly elections in Bihar, the state government has decided to offer 125 units of electricity for free to domestic consumers every month. The government is also planning to install solar power plants on their rooftops or at nearby public places to provide the benefits of clean energy.
In a message posted on ‘X’ today, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that this decision will be implemented with immediate effect, and it will benefit a total of 1 crore 67 lakh families in the state.

He said, “We have been providing electricity to everyone at affordable rates from the very beginning. Now we have decided that from 1 August 2025, that is, from the July bill itself, all domestic consumers in the state will not have to pay any money for electricity up to 125 units. This will benefit a total of 1 crore 67 lakh families in the state.”
He added: “We have also decided that in the next three years, with the consent of all these domestic consumers, solar power plants will be installed on their rooftops or at nearby public places to provide benefits.”
The Bihar CM also announced that under the Kutir Jyoti scheme, for extremely poor families, the state government will bear the entire cost of installing solar power plants, and for the rest, the government will provide appropriate support.
He said, ”This means domestic consumers will no longer have to bear any cost for electricity up to 125 units, and at the same time, it is estimated that within the next three years, up to 10,000 megawatts of solar energy will be available in the state.”
The decision to offer 125 units of electricity free to domestic consumers is yet another addition to the list of lucrative schemes launched by Nitish Kumar recently to woo voters ahead of the assembly elections due in October-November.
Among other major announcements he has made recently are a hike in social security pensions, implementation of a domicile policy for women, formation of a Youth Commission, and the plan to create one crore jobs in the next five years.
Incidentally, all these schemes have already been announced by the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly as part of the RJD’s poll promises.
Commenting on the announcement, RJD State Spokesperson Ejaz Ahmad said that Nitish Kumar is compelled to copy the RJD’s every promise, plan, vision, and ideas because he has no vision to lead Bihar.
