Goa has always been famous for late-night parties, shiny casinos, loud music, beach selfies. But now, a very different idea is floating in the salty sea air. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev wants Goa to slow down, breathe deep, and stretch into a new identity, one rooted in Sanatan culture, ayurveda, mental wellness.

Speaking casually but firmly on the sidelines of a major ayurveda event, Ramdev made it clear: Goa should be known for healing minds and bodies, not just rolling dice and nightlife.

Ramdev said Goa’s beauty is unquestionable; the sea, the sand, the sunrise, and the green landscape already attract tourists from across the world. But he also pointed out that casinos, alcohol, and dance parties dominate the state’s image.

“Wellness and health need to be associated with Goa,” he said adding that people from all over the world should come here not just for adventure and sightseeing, but for peace, health, and wellness.

His comments came after Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant pitched the state as a future destination for ayurveda and wellness tourism at the first-ever ayurveda conference held in Goa.

Patanjali’s big Goa plan

The biggest headline from Ramdev’s visit was his announcement that Patanjali plans to set up its second-largest yoga and wellness centre in Goa, next only to the iconic Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar.

“This will be the biggest Patanjali wellness centre after Haridwar,” Ramdev said adding that the project will be built with the cooperation of the Goa government.

According to him, the centre will cater to a global audience seeking ayurveda, yoga, and holistic healing, helping Goa step into a new role on the world wellness map.

CM Sawant pushes ayurveda and mental wellness

Chief minister Pramod Sawant, who chaired a panel discussion on International Wellness, strongly supported this vision. He said Goa is already seeing patients from outside the state coming for mental wellness treatment.

Ayurveda, he noted, can play a key role through holistic and integrated care. Sawant suggested that clear guidelines should be framed to strengthen wellness tourism and integrated healthcare.

“Our government wants Goa to emerge as a global wellness and medical value travel hub,” he said assuring continued support for ayurveda’s global outreach.

Ramdev also shared that the government is preparing a pool of trained therapists and doctors to meet the growing demand for wellness tourism. This move is expected to create jobs while improving healthcare services for both locals and visitors.

Meanwhile, Patanjali CEO Acharya Balkrishna said efforts are being made to include ayurvedic concepts in education, research, manufacturing, and medical treatment, ensuring ayurveda becomes part of daily life, not just therapy.
