What began as a high-energy beach concert in Europe has ended in a serious legal twist for American rapper Wiz Khalifa.

Last summer, fans gathered in Costinesti, Romania for the popular “Beach, Please!” festival. They expected music, lights, celebration. Wiz Khalifa delivered exactly that until one moment changed the course of the night.

During his performance in July 2024, the rapper allegedly smoked cannabis on stage. He was later found with more than 18 grams in his possession.

In Romania, cannabis laws are strict. What might be seen as casual behavior in some countries quickly became a criminal matter there. Soon after the show, Wiz Khalifa was arrested and charged with illegal drug possession.

Wiz Khalifa breaks his silence

Shortly after the incident, Wiz Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, took to X (formerly Twitter) to address fans and the Romanian public. He said he never meant to insult the country or its laws.

“Last night’s show was amazing,” he wrote, adding that he did not intend any disrespect by lighting up on stage. He also thanked Romanian authorities for being respectful and joked that he would return just without marijuana next time.

At the time, many assumed the matter would quietly fade away. It didn’t.

Court delivers a strong message

More than a year later, the case reached a turning point. According to reports, the Constanta Court of Appeal has now sentenced Wiz Khalifa to nine months in prison after finding him guilty of possessing dangerous drugs for personal use.

The court made it clear that this was not just about one artist. Judges said the sentence was meant to set an example, especially because Khalifa is a global celebrity. They argued that his public behaviour could send the wrong message to young people.

In strong words, the court stated that his actions risked making illegal drug use appear normal and socially acceptable, something Romanian law strictly opposes.

From fine to prison time

Earlier this year, in April 2025, a lower court had imposed a much lighter punishment: a criminal fine of about $830. But prosecutors were not satisfied.

That appeal eventually led to the nine-month prison ruling.

Since Wiz Khalifa is a US citizen, it remains unclear whether Romanian authorities will seek his extradition. Legal experts say such cases can take time and depend on diplomatic and legal agreements between countries.

A known cannabis advocate

Wiz Khalifa has long been open about his cannabis use. In past interviews, he has spoken freely about smoking daily and even spending thousands of dollars a month on it. He also runs a successful cannabis brand Khalifa Kush. It has partnerships in the legal marijuana business.
