Raghava Lawrence enters politics; is Vijay’s TVK eyeing him for Trichy East?
From the film set of 'Benz' to the political arena, Raghava Lawrence has made his move. All eyes are now on Trichy East, the seat Vijay won and walked away from.
He compared a new government to moving into a new house. He said even the street dog takes time to warm up to you. Now half the internet thinks he called them the dog.

Actor-director Raghava Lawrence on Sunday stepped in to clear the air after a comment made during a recent media interaction set off a storm on social media. Several users had accused him of comparing ordinary people to stray dogs. Lawrence said the remarks were taken out of context and asked people to watch the full video before drawing conclusions.
The controversy started when Lawrence spoke about the TVK government led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay. While defending the government, he said a new administration needs time to understand the challenges of governance.

To make his point, Lawrence used an analogy. He said: “We move into a new house after visiting the place once or twice. But only when we start living in it do we slowly discover one problem after another. Even a stray dog in the area will bark at us. We have to buy either biscuits or sometimes even biriyani to ensure the dog gets familiar with us. It’s the case with a house and a dog. You’ve given him a state, give them some time. Think positively. You wanted change, change is now here. I feel if you give them time, it’ll be good.”

Clips from the interaction started circulating on social media soon after the press meet. Several users interpreted his words as a comparison between people and stray dogs. The clips spread quickly, and criticism mounted through the day. Lawrence found himself facing accusations of being disrespectful toward the very public he was claiming to support.
Later the same day, Lawrence posted a clarification on X directly addressing the controversy. He denied comparing anyone to a dog and called the reports spreading that claim false and misleading.
“I have always said that my fans and the people are equal to my mother. Some are spreading false news that I referred to people as dogs, which is completely untrue and misleading,” he wrote.
Hi everyone,
I would like to clarify a misunderstanding regarding my recent press meeting.
I have always said that my fans and the people are equal to my mother. Some are spreading false news that I referred to people as dogs, which is completely untrue and misleading.

He followed that up with another note explaining what he actually intended. “All I meant was that when we move into a new house, it takes time to understand the surroundings and even the dogs in the area, their habits, and what they like to eat. I’m not such a heartless person as to call people dogs, whom I respect deeply and regard as equal to my mother,” he added.
Lawrence also asked people to go back and watch the full video. “I was only talking about understanding a new environment and did not refer to people anywhere. I request everyone to watch the full video and understand what I actually meant,” he wrote.
The controversy comes at a particularly sensitive time for Lawrence. He has been in the news for weeks following hints at a possible political entry. He recently asked his fans on social media to help him decide whether he should enter politics or continue with films and social work.
He wrote that he had never imagined entering politics but that circumstances had pushed him toward considering it. He left the decision to his followers, saying he would proceed only if they said yes. The response on social media was largely in favour of him making the political move.
His potential entry has been linked to the upcoming Trichy East Assembly bypoll. The seat fell vacant after Chief Minister Vijay, who had won from two constituencies in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, chose to vacate Trichy East and retain the Perambur seat. Lawrence’s name has been widely discussed as a possible TVK candidate for that bypoll.
Lawrence is one of the best-known names in South Indian cinema. He started his career as choreographer before moving into acting, directing, producing. He is best known for the Muni and Kanchana horror-comedy franchise, which became one of the most successful film series in Tamil cinema. He made his Bollywood directorial debut with Laxmii in 2020.
Outside of cinema, Lawrence is popular for philanthropic work. He runs the Raghava Lawrence Charitable Trust, which has funded medical treatments for underprivileged children, supported people with disabilities, and provided aid to farmers. That track record has long driven speculation about a possible political career.
