If you were planning to see Vijay in ‘Jana Nayagan’, what was supposed to be his grand farewell to cinema before diving into politics, brace yourselves. The wait just got longer.
Canadian distributor and cinema chain York Cinemas has officially confirmed that the movie will not release before April 30, 2026. Months of anticipation have now turned into a forced pause for one of the most talked-about films of the year.

The news came via a statement sent to ticket holders, where the cinema chain urged moviegoers with advance bookings to contact their local theatres for refunds if they hadn’t already received them.
“Kindly contact our theatres to have it arranged at the earliest,” the notice read. The chain also promised that loyalty members would get priority booking once the new release date is out. Perhaps a small consolation for fans who’ve been counting down the days.
What’s missing, though, is any clue about why the delay happened or when the makers might finally announce a fresh release date. For now, it’s all a suspense thriller off-screen.
A star-studded lineup, a massive budget, and a political twist
Directed by H Vinoth and backed by KVN Productions, ‘Jana Nayagan’ was being touted as Vijay’s final screen appearance before his full-time political journey. The film’s star-studded supporting cast includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani.
Originally, the makers aimed for a January 9, 2026 release timed perfectly for Pongal when Vijay’s films traditionally rake in blockbuster numbers.
Fans were already imagining the spectacle: massive opening days, filled theatres, and a festival clash with Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi. But life had other plans.
CBFC roadblock: Why ‘Jana Nayagan’ was pulled
The film hit major snag with Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Although the production had submitted the movie on December 18, 2025, and examining committee recommended U/A certificate after some minor edits, the decision later overturned.
On January 5, 2026, CBFC’s regional officer informed the team that chairperson had referred ‘Jana Nayagan’ to a revising committee. Despite a court approach by the makers, the legal route hit a dead end. Eventually, KVN Productions withdrew its writ petition expressing willingness to comply with the revising committee’s process.
Financial fallout: KVN Productions and the Tamil Nadu box office
The delay isn’t just bad news for fans. It’s also a serious blow for KVN Productions and other stakeholders. Analysts estimate that theatre owners and distributors could lose close to ₹100 crore due to the indefinite postponement.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala told India Today: “Pongal was likely to witness the clash of Vijay’s Jana Nayagan and Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi. Vijay’s film could easily have made ₹150-200 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. Parasakthi made ₹55 crore in Tamil Nadu. Since there’s no projected revenue, the Tamil Nadu box office could have lost almost ₹100 crore because of Jana Nayagan’s delay.”
KVN Productions had big plans for early 2026, expecting ‘Jana Nayagan’ and another major film, ‘Toxic’, to release within months of each other. The production house had likely projected recouping Jana Nayagan’s massive budget and using its success to boost Toxic’s promotions.
Now, with the Vijay-starrer in limbo, the company may face financial pressure just as it ramps up marketing for ‘Toxic’, starring Yash and directed by Geetu Mohandas, set to release on March 19, 2026.
