Ten years is a long time. Angelina Jolie has spent all of them single.
The actress made the admission in a recent interview. She was speaking about her new film ‘Couture’ when the conversation turned personal. What she said was direct and without any of the usual deflection that comes with this kind of question.

“To be candid, I haven’t dated since I divorced a decade ago. So I kind of get in my head that that aspect of me is not centered in my life if I’m focusing on my children, my family.”

That was it. No elaboration about why. No hints about anyone new. Just a straightforward answer from a 51-year-old woman who has been raising six children largely on her own since one of the most public separations in Hollywood history.
Couture is the film Jolie was promoting when she gave the interview. In it, she plays an American filmmaker in Paris for Fashion Week. Her character receives a breast cancer diagnosis and, in the middle of all of that, falls for her cinematographer, a man named Anton.
Playing a character who navigates love while also being a devoted mother pushed Jolie to think about that dynamic in her own life. She said it took her a moment to arrive at the idea that her character could be both things at the same time. A mother who is fully present for her daughter and also a woman who needs and deserves love.
She said, “It might be very healing for her.” The way she said it made clear she was not just talking about the character.
Jolie has six children with Brad Pitt. Maddox is 24. Pax is 22. Zahara is 21. Shiloh is 20. Twins Knox and Vivienne are 17.
Her three daughters have been part of what she described as a slow return to herself. She said they speak to her as young women now. Watching them has reminded her of what she wants for them and what she may have let go of for herself along the way.
“They’re bringing me back to my old self,” she said.
She also noted that her daughters have started to signal something specific to her. “I think they kind of want me now to not just be Mom,” she said. There is room, she suggested, for her to be something more than a parent again.
Looking ahead, she said, “I’m thinking I have to live again. Be free again.”
