Dwayne Johnson has found himself at the centre of a heated social media debate after telling Esquire magazine that he is done talking about politics in public. The backlash came fast, and it came from some well-known Hollywood voices.
The interview in question is part of Esquire’s Summer 2026 cover story. Johnson, 54, was speaking ahead of the release of Disney’s live-action Moana, in which he returns as the demigod Maui.

During the conversation, he made his position on politics clear. He said his priority is creating, making films, and telling stories. Everything else, he said, takes a back seat.
“What I have learned through experience is that I need to keep the main thing the main thing. And the main thing for me is creating. It’s art. It’s storytelling. I’ve learned I’m going to keep my politics to myself,” Johnson told the magazine.
He also made it clear this was not something he was happy about in terms of the current political environment. “Politics is omnipresent and it’s forever. I don’t like it. I hate it at times. And, I hate the slinging. I hate all the bullshit that comes with it,” he said.
He stopped short of saying political conversations should never happen. He just no longer wants to be someone who leads them from his platform.
The Biden regret that started all this
This is not a new position for Johnson. He had already signalled a shift back in 2024.
Johnson told Fox News in 2024 that he regretted endorsing Joe Biden for president in 2020 because it caused division among his fans. He said at the time that his goal was to bring the country together and that there would be no endorsement going forward.
That statement already drew attention. But the Esquire interview this month put his stance back in the spotlight, and the reaction this time has been sharper.
George Takei responds
Star Trek legend George Takei did not hold back. Takei shared his thoughts on Threads with just three words: “Silence is complicity.”
Takei has been one of Hollywood’s most consistent political voices for years. He has spoken openly about civil rights, LGBTQ+ issues, and American political life. His response was short but it spread quickly across social media and was picked up widely.
Wil Wheaton goes further
Actor Wil Wheaton, best known for Stand By Me, went a step further. Wheaton responded to Takei’s post with a blunt message calling Johnson’s stance deeply disappointing, saying it revealed him to be a coward.
Wheaton has been vocal about politics for years. He has publicly criticised Donald Trump and supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. His reaction was very much in line with the positions he has held consistently.
Johnson’s health scare in the middle of all this
The Esquire interview is not only about politics. Johnson also revealed a personal health scare that happened earlier this year.
The cover story opens with Johnson’s account of discovering a lump on one of his testicles on the morning of his Jumanji press commitments at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. His doctor told him it was probably epididymitis but that it could also be cancer. Johnson was told to come in for an ultrasound first thing the next morning.
He had to spend 24 hours not knowing, while also being present and switched on at a full-day press event, making speeches and joking around the entire time. He has since confirmed he is okay.
