U.S. President Donald Trump has stepped into a pop culture moment, this time defending actress Sydney Sweeney, who is facing criticism for her latest ad campaign with American Eagle.

On Monday, Trump took to his social media platform to support the ‘Euphoria’ star, calling her American Eagle ad the “HOTTEST” out there.

“Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the HOTTEST ad out there,” he posted. “Go get ‘em Sydney.” Though he initially spelled her name as “Sidney,” he quickly deleted and reposted the message with the correct spelling.

In a follow-up comment, Trump took aim at progressive politics, saying, “Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be.”

His support came after reports over the weekend revealed that Sweeney is a registered Republican voter in Monroe County, Florida. According to ABC News, publicly available voting records show a “Sydney B. Sweeney” registered in Summerland Key, Florida, with the same birthday as the actress.

She reportedly bought a mansion in the area earlier in 2024.

When reporters asked Trump about her political leanings during a press interaction on Sunday, he seemed pleased.

“Ohhhhh, now I love her ad. Is that right, is Sydney Sweeney?” he said. “You’d be surprised at how many people are Republicans… If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.”

The controversy started with American Eagle’s latest campaign starring Sydney Sweeney. The ad plays on the words “jeans” and “genes,” blending fashion and science in a way that hasn’t sat well with everyone.

In one clip, Sweeney explains, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue,” while the camera pans from her jeans to her face.

Another ad shows her wiping down a photo of herself, with the tagline “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Genes”, the word “genes” later being crossed out and replaced with “jeans.”

Some critics say the ad’s wordplay dangerously flirts with eugenics. It discredited and harmful idea that humans can be improved through selective breeding. The National Human Genome Research Institute describes eugenics as a pseudoscience with a dark history.

While there’s no direct mention of eugenics in the ad, critics argue the “great genes” message paired with a focus on physical traits is troubling.

Others say the campaign simply sexualizes Sweeney and sells her appearance more than the product itself. Some online voices have even drawn comparisons to Brooke Shields’ controversial 1980 Calvin Klein ad, where the then-15-year-old actress spoke about genetics while modeling jeans in a highly stylized, sensual setting.

So far, Sydney Sweeney has not responded to the controversy or addressed her reported political affiliation. The actress has typically stayed quiet about her views, but her family has occasionally faced online criticism.

In 2022, she received criticism after photos from a family gathering included guests wearing MAGA-style hats. But she later asked the internet not to make assumptions.
