Statement from Rohit Shetty’s team
Rohit Shetty’s spokesperson said that the stickers were initially in use during a period of heightened security after a recent firing incident at the filmmaker’s residence.
“Following the firing incident at Rohit Shetty’s residence, the police had implemented heightened security measures and provided protection. Identification stickers were placed during the initial phase which have now been discontinued,” the statement read.
The spokesperson also confirmed that Shetty continues to have police protection. “At present, Rohit Shetty continues to remain under police security, with two personnel deployed for his safety, as the matter remains under active surveillance. We extend our sincere appreciation to the Mumbai Police for their steadfast support and cooperation during this challenging period,” the statement added.
What laws did Shetty allegedly break?
The controversy hinges on Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which prohibits civilians from using police stickers, lights, or logos on private vehicles.
Reports from Mid-Day indicate that Shetty had customised at least two of his SUVs with these police identifiers.
Reports say, “Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as amended in 2019, it is illegal for private individuals to display a ‘Police’ sticker, logo, or board on personal vehicles. Section 177 clearly forbids this.”
