She met a global pop star at a Mumbai party, casually dropped a cult classic recommendation, and ended up getting the film praised back to her face. For actress Huma Qureshi, that night turned into one of those “you had to be there” Bollywood stories that feels almost unreal.
And the pop star in question was none other than Ed Sheeran.

‘Ultimate flex’ moment at a star-studded Mumbai party
Huma Qureshi recently opened up about a memorable evening at a party hosted by filmmaker Farah Khan in Mumbai. The guest of honour was Ed Sheeran, who was visiting India.
Talking on a podcast with Prakhar Gupta, Huma laughed while recalling how surreal the meeting felt. She said it was her “ultimate flex” moment when she discovered that Ed Sheeran had already watched her debut film.
That film was Gangs of Wasseypur, the cult crime saga directed by Anurag Kashyap.
Huma said she was genuinely shocked when she heard it. She remembered asking him in disbelief if he had really seen the film, especially since it is such a gritty Indian story.
At the party, Ed was warm, friendly, and curious about India. According to Huma, he said he loved the country and would be interested in doing music work here someday.
How a Bollywood film became a surprise conversation starter
The conversation between Huma and Ed Sheeran did not stop at greetings. In fact, it took a very unexpected turn.
As Ed was being called away during the party, Huma casually suggested he should explore more Indian cinema. She jokingly told him that if he wanted to understand “colorful Indian language and flavour,” he should watch ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’.
That is when the moment flipped.
Ed stopped, looked surprised, and asked her directly if she had acted in the film. When she said yes, things got even more exciting.
According to Huma, Ed immediately revealed that he had just watched the film recently, and he absolutely loved it. He even called his manager right there, which confused people around them, including Farah Khan, who asked what was happening.
But the reason was simple: Ed was impressed. He reportedly called the film “very cool” and praised it warmly.
Huma described the whole exchange as a rare and surreal moment.
From gritty cinema to global recognition: The film that started it all
‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ remains one of the most talked-about Indian films even years after its release. Written by Anurag Kashyap and Zeishan Quadri, the two-part crime saga featured a massive ensemble cast.
The film included performances from actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Richa Chadha, Reema Sen, Piyush Mishra, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vineet Kumar Singh, Pankaj Tripathi, Anurita Jha, Tigmanshu Dhulia in key roles.
It received strong critical praise and went on to win a National Award for Best Audiography. Nawazuddin Siddiqui also received a Special Jury Award for his performance.
What’s next for Huma Qureshi
While the Ed Sheeran story continues to make headlines, Huma Qureshi is also busy with her next big project.
She will next be seen in ‘Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups’, directed by Geetu Mohandas.
The film stars Yash in a dual role and also features Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Tara Sutaria, and Rukmini Vasanth in important roles.
Produced by KVN Productions and Monster Mind Creations, the film is described as a period gangster drama. It also marks Yash’s return to the big screen after the massive success of ‘KGF Chapter 2’.
The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 4.
