‘Can you crash my sister’s wedding?’: How Ed Sheeran and Martin Garrix ended up surprising a Chicago bride after a DM
A joke about inviting Ed Sheeran to the wedding turned into reality after one bold DM. He and Martin Garrix actually showed up at the Adler Planetarium, and the bride nearly fainted.
Some wedding stories get exaggerated with every retelling. This one does not need any help. Tessa Kindelin and Brendan Harty got married in Chicago, and somewhere between the vows and the dance floor, two of the biggest names in music walked through the door.
Before the wedding, Kindelin and Harty had been joking around about their dream guest list. Ed Sheeran and Martin Garrix happened to be in Chicago that same weekend, and the couple half jokingly wondered what it would take to get them to show up.

“We had kind of joked about and talked about, you know, what if we invited them to our wedding,” Kindelin said.

It stayed a joke right up until her brother, Mike, decided to actually try.
One direct message changed everything
Mike sent Martin Garrix a direct message on social media, asking flat out if he would consider crashing his sister’s wedding. Garrix said yes. Sheeran did too, and the two later posted the exchange online for everyone to see.
“He’s got a DM from someone saying, can you crash my sister’s wedding. So, we’re going there,” Sheeran wrote in the post.
The moment it all came together
The wedding took place at the Adler Planetarium, a venue already known for its dramatic views of the Chicago skyline. As the celebration was underway, Sheeran and Garrix walked in, and the room reacted instantly.
“The crowd erupted,” Kindelin said. She knew her brother had been in touch with Garrix, but Sheeran’s appearance caught her completely off guard. “I heard their song playing. And then I saw Ed, and I was like, oh my God.”
Harty described the feeling in simpler terms. “It was surreal. Yeah, it was disbelief,” he said.
Guests could barely process what was happening
The couple’s wedding videographer, Lawrence Trantham, was right there capturing it all. He said the bride looked like she might faint from shock, and the rest of the guests were not handling it much better.
People were jumping, some stood frozen with their mouths open, and the entire room seemed to lose its composure at once. For a wedding that already felt special, it pushed the night into territory most couples only dream about.
Harty’s sisters, who have followed Sheeran’s music for years and attended his concerts, were especially overwhelmed. According to Harty, it gave the whole family something to celebrate together.
A dance that made it unforgettable
For Harty, the highlight came down to one simple moment. He got to dance with his new wife while Ed Sheeran performed for them directly.
“I got to dance with my wife and Ed Sheeran sang perfect to us,” he said. “So how could it get any better.”
Even days later, Kindelin admitted she still has trouble believing it actually happened, despite watching videos from multiple guests and multiple angles.
