Indian film industry is divided into many languages. While Bollywood and Tollywood are considered the most prominent film industries, Bengali film industry has been the most critically acclaimed one. Not only critics but the films seem to be doing a fair business at the box office as well. Check out the list of five Bengali films that are a must watch for movie goers;

Dutta vs Dutta

Based on the Anjan Dutt’s (director) semi-autobiography, A Bengali film released in 2012. The film starring Anjan Dutt received polarising reviews from the fans and critics. But few critics site this film as Dutt’s best film till date.

Hawa Bodol

A comedy film directed by Parambrata Chattopadhyay, the story revolves around two childhood friends, who met each other co-incidentally after a long time and somehow their life swapped after a night of endless drinks. The film is said to be inspired by Hollywood film, The Change Up, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman.

Proloy

The film starring Parambrata Chatterjee and Paran Bandopadhyay is based on the western action thriller genre, where a gang of criminals terrorise a village in Dukhia in rural Bengal. Interestingly, the film was second of its kind where an Android and IOS app was released for a Bengali film after Kaal Madhumas (2013).

The Japanese Wife

An epistolary romantic Indian Japan joint venture directed by acclaimed directior, Aparna Sen. The film features Rahul Bose, Raima Sen and Japanese actress Chigusa Takaku in the titlular role. The film revolves around a Bengali school teacher (Bose) and his Japanese wife (Takaku), whom he never met. The film received widespread acclaim and also had a decent run at the box office.

Praktan

Bengali films

The film starring Prosenjit Chatterjee and Rotuparna Sengupta released to widespread acclaim and also became one of the most successful Bengali films in the industry. The film also received International Film Business Award 2016 for becoming Highest Grossing Movie of the Year- Bengal alongside films from Bollywood and Tollywood at Indywood Film Carnival at Ramoji Film City.
