Wildlife photo stall at Malda Book Fair pulls crowd

Malda Book Fair

As the 29th Malda Book Fair at the Malda College ground in English Bazaar drew to a close on 24 January, a stall named ‘Malda Wildlife’ managed to draw hordes of visitors who marveled at an exhibition of shots from amateur wildlife photographers of the district.

Outside the fair too, this group of nature lovers is gradually gaining popular among the people here for their extraordinary wildlife photography and concern for nature conservation. Among the 29 members of the group, 21 brought 69 photographs, mainly of birds (local and migratory) for the show, which was enough to pull crowds of visitors.

According to Kishor Banik, an active member of the group along with others like Avijit Chakrabarty and Chandan Poddar–most of them teachers, they love nature and would like to work for its conservation. “We are driven by our love for nature and its beauty and purity. This drives us to frame its beautiful moments, thereby working hard for its conservation.

There was hardly an idle day in the exhibition as visitors to our stall grew by the day,” Mr Poddar said. He added that they also want to see the new generation interested in wildlife photography, which was unprecedented so far in a district like Malda. “We guide anyone interested in this, free of cost.

We want people to preserve mother-nature, which will ultimately benefit us,” he said. It may be mentioned that this group also protested the killing of migratory birds for meat at Panchanadapur in Manikchak recently. Mou Banerjee, a viewer, expressed her excitement at the quality of photography done in a small district like Malda, which she said was “unexpected.”
