Traffic diversions, tight security for Republic Day parade

Elaborate traffic and security arrangements have been put in place for the Republic Day parade on Red Road here on Friday. Movement of all types of goods vehicles shall be restricted along AJC Bose Road towards south from Moulali crossing), Strand Road upto Raja Woodmunt Street, along CR Avenue from GC Avenue and JL Nehru Road (both ways) from 5.30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Guru Nanak Sarani (Mayo Road) will remain closed for all vehicules, except the cars with stickers especially issued for the parade, from 5.30 a.m. till the parade gets over. Hospital Road East and West, Hospital Road, Lovers Lane, Casuarina Avenue, Khidderpore Road from Hastings crossing to J&N Island, RR Avenue between Y Road Tram Track and Govt Place West, Gostha Pal Sarani, Queensway, Plassey Gate Road, Dufferin Road, Outram Road and Esplanade Ramp will be closed to vehicular traffic from 5.30 a.m. till the parade gets over or after the dispersal of crowd.

Red Road will be closed for all vehicular movement from 10 p.m. on Thursaday till the parade is over at around 11.30 a.m. tomorrow. Kidderpore Road will not be used by the members of public who will be advised to move along AJC Bose Road, Chowringhee Road, Outram Road, Mayo Road or R R Avenue to the public enclosures on Red Road.

For the public enclosures located at the east and west of Tilak Statue and Gostha Pal Sarani, the people are advised to move along the southern pavement of Raj Bhavan and crossover by the pedestrian cross-walk. People coming by trams and buses will have to alight either at Esplanade or Park Street or Strand Road and then proceed towards the public enclosures along the specified roads.

Parking will be prohibited on few roads including Strand Road east, between Chowringhee road and AJC bose road from 5.30 a.m. till the parade is over and the crowd disperses. Vehicles belonging to Parade participants will be allowed entry only through Queens way. CSTC Buses will be allowed to enter and leave their depot at Esplanade via RR Avenue.

New Road will move in opposite direction, i.e. from south to north towards Dorina crossing. Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, conveying his best wishes, said: “This is the day when we should resolve to make every effort needed to secure the dreams of our founding fathers.”

“We must renew our pledge for unity and national integrity of our nation on this very special occasion,” he added. As many as 3000 police officers will be stationed in Red Road and its vicinity. There will also be greater vigilance in malls and hotels. All the deputy police commissioners will be on duty.
