The National Highways Authority of India has extended the suspension of traffic on a key stretch of national highway 10 (NH-10) for three more days, citing safety concerns following heavy rainfall, landslides, and erosion along the Teesta riverbank.

Rahul Kumar Gupta, general manager of PMU Siliguri, issued a fresh notice on Wednesday announcing that traffic along the Sevoke (Km 0.00) to Rangpo (Km 52.1) section will remain suspended from 6 PM on August 6 to 9 a.m. on 8 August. The decision, taken under Section 33 of the Control of National Highway (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002, aims to prevent accidents on the fragile stretch.

While the NHIDCL is the executing agency responsible for NH-10, the highway’s status remains a concern due to repeated slope failures—especially near Coronation Bridge (Km 0.0) and Chitrey (Km 30.0)—both identified as highly vulnerable points.

Traffic on this lifeline route connecting Siliguri to Sikkim was initially suspended from 3 to 6 August after multiple landslides disrupted the road network and threatened the stability of embankments along the Teesta.

The highway administrator has requested the district administration to arrange alternative traffic routes during the extended closure to ensure uninterrupted flow of goods and passenger vehicles.

Travelers have been advised to avoid NH-10 until further notice and follow official advisories for route updates.
