Archana Majumdar, a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), visited Malda on Monday to investigate the recent conflict among intern doctors at Malda Medical College and Hospital.

She held a closed-door meeting with the college authorities, intern doctors, and a section of faculty members, and later expressed strong displeasure over the lapses that aggravated the situation.

Referring to the incident at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata earlier this year, Majumdar said, “After that episode, such incidents cannot be tolerated anymore. Everyone is answerable here — the college authorities, the medical education department, the police, and even the unions.”

She questioned why the police outpost on campus was not informed despite the escalating tension. “A minor conflict over the distribution of work turned into a major issue. It is shocking that posters targeting the victim were circulated inside the campus, further victimising her at her workplace,” Majumdar observed.

Detailing her findings, she said the woman intern was confined to a room overnight in the presence of the college principal, an incident she described as deeply disturbing. “Not only was she confined, but she was also subjected to harassment by others, including outsiders,” Majumdar stated.

The NCW member assured that she would place her recommendations before the appropriate authorities, urging strict action against those responsible. “Safety and security of working women at their workplace cannot be compromised under any circumstances,” she emphasised.
