Highlighting the ‘concrete jungle’ and the mushrooming buildings and highlighting their adverse effects on the environment and to promote greenery, the Siliguri Horticultural Society (SHS) will be organizing its 34th annual North Bengal Flower Show at the Kanchan Jungha Stadium here from 8-12 February.

Around 76 species of rare flowers, foliage, orchid, and fruits from the Hills, Terai and adjoining regions will be displayed in the show, organizers said today. “The collections will be displayed in the event for competition, and after that, it will be open for public exhibition.

The sample of collections will also be available for sale,” said general secretary of the SHS Prasanta Sen. “An important activity of the SHS during the flower show will be to organize a seminar on ‘To go active green’ and project the flower market,” he added.

Expressing concerns over rapid deforestation and highlighting the need to go green, SHS president Nantu Pal said, “In a bid to battle the rising pollution, we are pressing the demand for planting two saplings after uprooting a tree in the city.

Only then we will be to increase greenery in the city and have cleaner air to breathe.” The SHS has been conducting the flower show since 1984, it is learnt.
