Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday awarded 10 districts across the country, including North Sikkim, for outstanding contribution to ‘effective community engagement’ under the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ (BBBP) scheme.

The award was received by the District Collector of North Sikkim, Karma R Bonpo. As the country marked International Women’s Day on Thursday, Mr Modi also launched the National Nutrition Mission and the pan-India expansion of the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ scheme covering all 640 districts in the country in a mega event held at Jhunjhunu in Rajastan.

Among the other district awarded under the BBBP scheme were Raigarh (Chattisgarh), Sikar (Rajasthan),Bijapur (Karnataka), TaranTaran (Punjab), Hyderabad (Telegana), Sonipat (Harayana), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Jhunjhunu (Rajasthan) and Udampur (J&K).

The BBBP scheme is being implemented in North Sikkim since the past three years and under the programme, various community engagement events have been undertaken there.

“Under the leadership of the Honorable Chief Minister, women have been given their due rights and status (in the state). Due to the efforts of the government, women are taking a leading role in all walks of life,” the collector, Mr Bonpo, said.
