Cracking the whip in the case of grave financial irregularities in the construction of flats at Maharaja Agarsein Enclave in Barnala, the Local Government minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday ordered to suspend charge-sheeted five officials.

Disclosing this on Friday, an official spokesperson said that the residents of Barnala had complained that the Improvement Trust Barnala had committed irregularities of grave financial irregularities in the construction of Lower Income Group (LIG) flats at block ‘B’ in the Maharaja Agarsein Enclave scheme.

In a Press statement, Sidhu said that the corruption would not be tolerated at any cost in the functioning of the department and strict action would be taken against the officials indulging in the corrupt practices.

The probe conducted by the department found financial irregularities of grave nature owing to the gross negligence on the part of departmental officials, which caused huge loss to the state exchequer, added the spokesperson.

It was established in the probe that payments have been made even with regard to the works which were not done. After the complainant made the complaint, the officials in order to brush the irregularities under the carpet stopped the payments and adjusted the bills. The possession of flats was not given in time, resulting in economic loss.

The quality of work was not up to the mark with no arrangement for the quality control, said the spokesperson. Acting tough on this, Assistant Trust Engineer Baljit Singh, Trust Engineer Satbhushan Sachdeva, Executive Officers Jatinder Singh and Jeevan Bansal have been ordered to be placed under suspension with immediate effect.
