Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday appointed Shantaram Naik as the new chief of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC).

A Rajya Sabha MP, Naik will succeed Luizinho Faleiro as the Goa Congress president.

Naik had been the GPCC president earlier too.

In the recent Goa assembly elections, the Opposition Congress could not form the government despite having emerged as the single largest party. The incumbent BJP again managed to form its government there under Manohar Parrikar's leadership along with a few smaller parties.
