Authorities of the Raiganj Municipality on Thursday launched a drive to make the town free of garbage.

Under the ‘Nirmal Mission Bangla’ programme of the state government, a team of officials of the civic body also distributed dust-bins among shopkeepers along NS Road and MG Road in Raiganj.

Chairman of the Raiganj Municipality, Sandip Biswas, Vice-Chairman Arindam Sarkar, Sanitary Inspector of the municipality, Sudeb Das, along with the Secretary of the West Dinajpur Chamber of Commerce, Shankar Kundu, and the Secretary of the Raiganj Merchant Association, Atanubandhu Lahiri, went from place to place and handed over the trash cans to the shopkeepers.

“We distributed free dustbins to all the shopkeepers in Raiganj under the Nirmal Bangla Mission. Our aim is to make Raiganj garbage free. We distributed hundreds of dustbins on Thursday and we will be distributing more in the next few days,”

Municipality Chairman Sandip Biswas said. “In the meantime, we have ordered shopkeepers to not throw garbage near their shops or on the roads. Our workers will be collecting the garbage regularly in the morning. We have also convinced traders against displaying their goods on the pavements which is causing problems for pedestrians,” he added.
