Police arrest 3 in connection with murder of Kunu Panda

Police on Wednesday arrested three persons in connection with the Kunu Panda murder that had occurred 13 days ago. Superintendent of police, Niti Sekhar said either others involved in the crime are still at large. The arrested accused persons are Jiten Murmu, 29, Babu Rao, 28 both of village Talengasahi and Abhi Jena, 32 of Chandipur.

They are booked under section 302,120(b),34 of IPC and 25 and 27 of Arms act. The police said Jiten and Babu were involved in the crime directly while Abhi had provided shelter to the accused duo. At least 10 people were directly involved in murder of Kunu Panda, 39 and it was a well-planned murder, the SP saidadding eight of them were at large.

The absconding accused are Kailash Das, Dibyajati Patra, Manoj Lenka, Murli Das , Sanjib Swamy, Siba Das, Upendra Lenka and Kanduru all are resident of Sahadevkhunta area. “The incident is fall out of rivalry Kunu Panda gang with another anti-social gang. They fought it out over a land dispute related issue”, he added. Kunu had a criminal record and was also a former elected councillor.

He had come out of jail on bail. His elder brother Papa Panda is a history-sheeter. IIC Sahadevkhunta police station, Paresh Rout said two swords, that were used for commissioning of crime were recovered near a culvert in Kantabania area on Wednesday. It may be recalled that Kunu Panda was hacked to death in broad daylight in the town here.

The assailants chased and hacked him with swords on the street. The murder had rocked the town as it was gang war in the open and many people had questioned the competence of the law enforcement agencies saying law and order had collapsed in the district.
