A 29-year old grocer was duped on Monday as he got a half blank Rs 2000 note from the DCB Bank ATM in Jamia Nagar.

“Shabad Chaudhary debited Rs 10,000 from the ATM machine and collected four notes of 2000 denomination (one fake), three notes of 500 denomination and five of 100 denomination,” said Romil Banya, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South East Delhi.

Shabad told The Statesman: “I needed cash urgently. My friend asked me for Rs 10,000 as he had to pay up in AIIMS for the treatment. I went to DCB bank ATM machine which is situated in Shaheen Bagh near the vegetable market. I used my YES Bank debit card. When I checked the cash, I found one 2000 denomination note was half the original note and half was blank paper. Immediately I showed the note to the people nearby and they suggested I call DCB Bank’s customer care.”

He added, “I did not get any assurance from customer service. Then I called the manager of my bank, Varun, and he advised me to give him a written complaint of the incident. I have done that.”

Varun, 28, said, “We have received Shabad’s complaint and have forwarded it to the concerned bank manager. It’s a serious issue and we are looking forward to an outcome from this case.”

Shabad also filed a complaint at Jamia Nagar police station in South East Delhi. “A written complaint has been filed by Shabad. We are checking the CCTV footage of the ATM to verify such an incident. Following which case under section 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of Indian Penal Code has been registered at Jamia Nagar police station. The notes which the complainant collected were all original. One note was half original and half blank paper. We asked the complainant to submit his note in the police station for forensic examination but the complainant refused,” said an investigating officer of the case.

Banya said they are analysing the CCTV footage and verifying with eyewitnesses.
