The Geography department of Malda College in English Bazaar has felicitated toppers in the subject from both the institution and the University of Gour Banga, with a view to encouraging them in their future endeavours.
Amid a function held in the college on Sunday, the Geography batch of this year’s final semester was also given a farewell by the students of the department in the presence of the former head of the department and the former principal of Malda College, Dr AKM Anwaruzzaman, who travelled to Malda from Kolkata on Saturday night only to attend the programme.
“Almost 100 students and teachers of the college were present to felicitate these toppers and give away prizes that contained important books or transparent globes that would help their thirst for knowledge in this specific stream,” a college official s said.

It may be noted here that such felicitation events had been stopped after Dr Anwaruzzaman left the college in 2016. It is learnt that the former department head used to bear all the expenses for such programmes earlier.
“All the toppers, some of whom are now studying abroad, from the batches of 2015, 16 and 17 were felicitated,” the college official said. Talking to The Statesman, the associate professor of Aliah University, Dr Anwaruzzaman, said, “Such programmes are needed to boost the students’ morale as they vow to do something big in the future.”
