The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is soon to start beautification around the Kendua canal in Baghajatin Rail Gate area which has become full with garbage that is allegedly being dumped by the residents of the area.

The move is expected to put a stop to the dumping activities in the canal water. The canal in ward 101 of the KMC which stretches from Greenview to Baghajatin Railway Gate area has reportedly become full with garbage as residents continue to dump garbage in the canal water.

The canal is linked to the drainage system of the concerned ward and dumping garbage is choking the drainage system. The local councillor has asked the residents not to dump garbage in the canal water but in vain.

According to KMC sources, the concerned councillor of ward-101, Bappaditya Dasgupta, has taken up the matter with the state irrigation department for the purpose of cleaning the canal and thereafter beautify a 2 km stretch of that canal to put a stop to the dumping activities.

The matter has also been taken up with the mayor Sovan Chatterjee. Speaking on the matter, the councillor, Bappaditya Dasgupta, said: “I have requested the residents several times not to dump garbage in the canal water but it had made no impact whatsoever. The canal is already overflowing with garbage. I finally took the matter up with the state irrigation minister Rajib Banerjee and have also notified the mayor Sovan Chatterjee about the issue.”

A letter for the purpose has also been sent to the state irrigation minister, confirmed the councillor. It was further known that the state irrigation department has agreed to take up the cleaning process of the canal following which the beautification initiative will be implemented by KMC.

The 2 km stretch of the canal is to be bordered with iron railings while the stretch will be beautified with lights and gardens on the banks of the canal.

The tendering for the project has already been completed while the work will soon resume, as per KMC sources.

An approximate amount of Rs 1 crore 36 lakh has reportedly been allocated by the state irrigation department for the project.

Adding to this initiative, a bridge is also being planned on the canal near the Baghajatin railway gate at a cost of Rs 1 crore 27 lakh.
