A panchayat in the tribal district of Kinnaur has ordered a complete clampdown on illegal gambling. The action came following a complaint by a villager, who informed the panchayat and the villagers of the menace on social media.

The complainant, Vidu Boris, had complained of gaming activities like snooker and tambola being run illegally, besides gambling in various establishments like hotels  in Giabong village. Holding the Panchayat representatives accountable, he said the residents of the village were a harried lot, as minor boys were being lured and their future was at stake.

In response to the complaint, the panchayat representatives using their judicial powers banned gambling and any immoral activities within its jurisdiction, that includes two Giabong and Rush Kulang villages.

The panchyat has put up a public notice for all the villagers and circulated the orders in five hotel establishments in the village, besides sensitising the people through social media. Up Pradhan Gian Singh Negi informed the residents that gambling, snooker and tambola involving betting are banned in the village under the Public Gambling Act, 1867 under Sections 3 and 4.

“The Panchayat has warned that anyone found guilty of violation, will not only face action of the panchayat, even the police and the administration will be involved to take legal action against the violator,” he said.

The panchayat has also called for efforts to eradicate the social evil and urged the participation of the villagers to provide information of any such illegal activities. Anyone can drop in anonymous complaints in a box provided for it and the panchayat will take necessary action, stated Gian Singh Negi.
