Himachal Pradesh government is planning to set up a Sports University in the state.

Talking to media persons at a programme in Chandigarh, HP Sports and Youth Services minister, Govind Singh Thakur said the state government is working on a new sports policy so that the upcoming players can be provided better training.

“We are studying policies of different states of the country to come out with the best policy in the interest of sports and sports persons. This will help the state players excel at national and international level,” he said. He said the government would construct mini stadia and sports academy in each district to encourage sports persons. “We will engage international players from the state would  for coaching the upcoming players in Himachal,” he said.

In continuation of the sports policy, the government has invited Dileep Thakur alias The Great Khali for organising WWE competitions at Solan and Mandi, he said.

Thakur said the state has no dearth of talent in sports and many sports persons of the state had excelled at national and international level.

“The government is committed to stop the exodus of sports persons from Himachal to other states and effective steps are being taken to provide to better sports facilities to them,” he said.

The comprehensive sports policy would further promote interest among youth and they would be provided with enough avenues to showcase their talent at national and international level. In addition, the government has given approval for filling vacant posts in sports department and these posts would soon be filled through Public Service Commission, he said.

He said a project worth Rs 500 crore has been prepared to encourage adventure sports and create basic infrastructure for the purpose.

“A shooting range would also be constructed for which in-principle approval has been granted by Central government,” he said, adding additional facilities would be created in existing sports complexes.
