A red alert has been sounded in Jammu and the neighbouring areas of Punjab after four persons hired a taxi from the Jammu railway station on Wednesday and fled after snatching the vehicle at gunpoint from the driver when they reached Pathankot (Punjab).

The police in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab have launched massive search operations as the driver of the taxi told them the miscreants were speaking Punjabi in the style it is spoken in Pakistan.

The four were captured in the CCTV cameras of the taxi stand here and also at the entry point in Punjab.

The police did not rule out terror angle but said it appeared more of a car snatching crime.

Security has been tightened in Pathankot and at the IAF base that was attacked by terrorists in 2016 who had snatched a police officer’s vehicle.

Meanwhile, security forces arrested two terrorists of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) on Wednesday and recovered a cache of arms and ammunition from their possession in Pulwama district of South Kashmir.

Acting on a credible input, the security forces arrested the duo at a check point at Panzgam in Awantipora area, a police spokesperson said.

“During checking, security forces recovered arms and ammunition from their possession which includes Under Barrel Grenade Launchers (UNGL), grenades and live rounds and other incriminating material,” said the officer. The arrested terrorists have been identified as Jan Mohammad Sheikh and Nasir-ul-Islam.

A woman carrying 20 hand grenades was arrested by the police in the outskirts of Srinagar on Tuesday evening.

The police said it arrested the woman along with 20 grenades from Lawaypora area in outskirts of Srinagar city.

They had set up a check post following intelligence inputs of an overground worker (OGW) coming to Srinagar from Baramulla to deliver the grenades to terrorists.

The security forces intercepted a car in which the woman was travelling with the grenades. She has been taken into custody.
