A fire which engulfed a residential structure near Carter Road in Bandra killed an 18-month-old-baby on Monday, 22 January. A 4-year-old suffered burn injuries in the incident which happened in a ground-plus-two-storey housing society.
The firemen were able to douse the flames in an hour. The injured child was admitted to the ICU at a hospital in Bandra.
Ashish Shelar, president of BJP Mumbai, tweeted that the fire occurred in a room which prima facie appears to be an illegal structure. Taking stock of the situation, the BJP leader demanded an inquiry and punishment for those responsible for the death of the baby.

In a separate incident on the same day, two firemen were injured and a part of a structure in the Mistry Industrial Estate gutted as a massive fire broke out in the early hours of Monday.
The fire engulfed a ground-plus-one-floor structure in the estate located in the industrial area near Marol. Firemen were called in at around 1.15 am who rushed in with eight fire-engines to contain the blaze.
It took a few hours for the personnel of the fire brigade to douse the flames, which had also spread over electrical installations.
The two injured firemen were discharged after primary treatment at the Cooper Hospital for their injuries.
Just three days ago, a massive fire had engulfed the Navrang studio in Mumbai’s Lower Parel area.
And in one of the biggest tragedies of 2017, 15 persons, including 11 women, were killed when a major fire broke out in the 1 Above restaurant in Mumbai on 29 December. Around 23 others were injured in the incident.
