What is H5N1 Avian influenza?
H5N1 is one of several influenza viruses that causes a highly infectious respiratory disease in birds called avian influenza (or “bird flu”). Infections in mammals, including humans, have also been documented.
The goose/Guangdong-lineage of H5N1 avian influenza viruses first emerged in 1996 and has been causing outbreaks in birds since then.
In humans, H5N1 infection can cause from mild illness to severe disease, and in some cases may prove fatal. Reported symptoms are mainly respiratory, though conjunctivitis and other non-respiratory signs have also been observed. Notably, there have been instances where individuals exposed to infected animals or contaminated environments tested positive for the virus but remained asymptomatic.
The shutting down of the zoo is a precautionary measure to safeguard public health and will remain in place until further notice.
