The Indian Army has stepped in after a serving Brigadier and his son were allegedly assaulted in South Delhi’s Vasant Vihar, saying it has taken “serious cognisance” of the incident and is pushing for swift action.

The case, which has raised concerns over safety and police response in the national capital, relates to an April 11 night altercation that escalated into violence after the officer objected to public drinking outside his residence.

What the Army has said on the incident

In an official statement, the Army said, “The authorities in Indian Army have taken serious cognizance of the case. A Military Police team has been directed to assist the Officer. The Delhi Police has been approached for expeditious investigation and take action on priority.”

The move signals direct institutional backing for the officer, even as questions are being raised over the handling of the complaint on the ground.

How the altercation unfolded

According to officials, the Brigadier, currently posted in Gujarat and staying in Delhi with his family, had stepped out for a walk with his son after dinner when they noticed two men drinking inside a parked car near their residence.

Speaking to IANS, the officer said that on Saturday night, after having dinner, he was going for a walk with his son. Just outside his house, there was a vehicle in which two people were drinking alcohol. He objected to it, and the talks escalated between them.

He said he called the police PCR van, which arrived about 20 minutes later. By then, the men had allegedly called their associates, who reached the spot and assaulted his son. When the Brigadier intervened, he too was allegedly manhandled.

Allegations of delayed police response

The officer has alleged that he did not receive immediate assistance at the local police station. He said he approached Vasant Vihar police station but found no help. Police asked for an MLC, but no one accompanied him to the hospital. He later went to RR hospital on his own for the medical examination.

Even after the MLC, he claimed, the police did not register an FIR initially and only made a General Diary entry.

Social media posts highlight concerns

The incident also drew attention after Colonel Danvir Singh raised concerns on X. He wrote, “I just spoke to the Brigadier…. A serving soldier who, after dinner, was taking a walk outside the society premises with his IITian son.”

“These Mercedes-Benz goons were consuming alcohol in public. On being objected, the Brigadier & son were assaulted by the 7-8 accomplices of these antisocial elements who were close by and called in by the car-O-bar duo,” he added.

“Brigadier and his son sustained injuries in the scuffle that ensued….. Don’t be shocked, the police were also present. I wonder how the society and the police conducts itself is shocking, more so in the national capital,” he further said.

Highlighting the officer’s service record, he added, “Brigadier in his younger days was part of numerous operations in the hinterland of Kashmir and also trans LC. Least he would have ever thought of that one day he will be on the receiving side, fighting the evil in the society he once risked his life for, while the police kept themselves as mute spectator.”

He later added, “FIR has been finally lodged after running around, a glimmer of hope. I am sure the culprits are made a specimen and the case will be a deterrent for other antisocial elements.”

Past cases add to concerns over probe fairness

The incident comes against the backdrop of earlier cases where courts have raised concerns over investigations into assaults on Army personnel.

In July last year, the Punjab and Haryana High Court transferred a case involving Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath to the Central Bureau of Investigation, observing that the probe by the Chandigarh Police lacked fairness and independence. The court noted that the Special Investigation Team was creating loopholes that could benefit the accused officers.

The case related to allegations that the Army officer and his son were assaulted by Punjab Police personnel in Patiala over a parking dispute. The High Court had expressed strong displeasure over delays in action, including failure to arrest the accused, and said such conduct set a wrong example.
