The Delhi Congress on Sunday blamed the BJP-led Delhi government for waterlogging and traffic congestion reported from several parts of the national capital following Saturday’s rainfall, alleging that the situation exposed shortcomings in the city’s monsoon preparedness.

Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav said the government’s claims of completing pre-monsoon drain cleaning, improving the drainage system and preventing waterlogging had been contradicted by the conditions witnessed after the rain. He pointed out that roads in several areas were inundated leading to traffic jams that caused enormous commuting woes and inconvenience to residents.

Yadav attributed the recurring waterlogging to poor coordination between the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), inadequate drain cleaning and neglect of the stormwater drainage system. He also accused the government of prioritising publicity over strengthening civic infrastructure.

The Delhi Congress demanded an immediate review of waterlogging-prone locations, an action plan for a permanent solution, an independent technical audit of drain-cleaning and monsoon preparedness, and accountability for officials found responsible for lapses.

The BJP government had not responded to these allegations at the time of filing this report.
