Day canteen set up for Balasore jail inmates

A dry canteen for inmates in Balasore jail campus under reform and welfare programme of the prisons department was inaugurated today by the Additional Director General of Prisons Binayananda Jha. From the canteen an inmate can by milk products, biscuits and basic daily need items including toothpaste, brush etc, said Jha .

“The inmates would no longer be required to depend on their relatives for daily use items and snacks. They can procure the same from the canteen. The inmates undergoing imprisonment get Rs 40 per day as remuneration with which they can buy the things of their requirement from the canteen.

This was curb cash pilferage of items and corruption as well , he said adding Balasore is the third jail in the state after Chaudwar and Jharpara to have such canteen facility for the inmates . The measure has been taken under the initiative of the state government and Prisons department. Surendra Pattnayak , the jail superintendent said , the canteen has been opened with initial amount Rs 25,000 from the welfare fund and the staffs of jail would be engaged in it.

“The profit amount would go to the welfare fund and there is further scope of expansion. The organic farming and vermin compost plan are underway,” he said . The jail has a plan of opening a furniture manufacturing unit after training interested inmates and opening of a petrol outlet in its campus .

During inauguration a plantation programme too held in the campus which was attended by district collector Ramesh Chandra Rout, ADM MM Pani and other officials of Balasore jail.
