Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu on Saturday inaugurated the renovated Terminal 2 (T2) of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).

According to the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the upgraded terminal will become operational from the intervening night of October 25 and 26. Terminal 2 was temporarily closed in April this year for a major upgrade.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, the Airports Authority of India, the CISF, and DIAL.

“Under the globally acknowledged and nationally respected leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are developing and transforming our airports into world-class transit hubs at an unprecedented pace,” the Civil Aviation Minister said.

“Handling nearly 50 per cent of northern India’s total passenger traffic and managing around 50,000 transfers daily, Delhi is emerging as a preferred transfer hub. I believe this has been possible only because of DIAL’s continuous efforts to upgrade infrastructure and enhance passenger throughput,” he added.

“Now, the 40-year-old legacy Terminal 2 has been reimagined and revitalized to meet modern aspirations and growing demand. I extend my heartiest congratulations and deepest appreciation to DIAL and GMR for executing an efficient, smart, and passenger-centric modernization project. Every traveller passing through here will experience the essence of a Connected, Competitive, and Caring India,” the Minister said.

Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL, said, “The refurbished Terminal 2 represents a significant milestone in Delhi Airport’s transformation journey. Designed as a future-ready, passenger-friendly terminal, T2 integrates modern technology, smart infrastructure, and improved accessibility to deliver a seamless travel experience.

“This reopening also enables more balanced airline operations across terminals, further enhancing efficiency and convenience for millions of travellers. With these upgrades, we are confident that Delhi Airport will continue to set new benchmarks in operational excellence and passenger satisfaction,” Jaipuriar added.

The upgraded Terminal 2, now transformed into a future-ready, passenger-centric terminal, embodies DIAL’s vision of building a seamless, technology-driven, and comfortable airport experience.

The renovation of the 40-year-old terminal aims to optimise flight operations across terminals and enhance passenger convenience in line with the airport’s growing traffic and expanding airline operations.

The future-ready Terminal 2 integrates advanced systems and automation to deliver a smarter, faster, and more efficient passenger journey.

Key features include self-baggage drop (SBD) facility introduced for the first time at T2, enabling passengers to check in their luggage independently, reducing queues and saving time.

Six new Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBs) for quicker and safer aircraft handling, featuring adjustable platforms for improved accessibility.

Smart design features such as hinged swing doors on boarding bridges and side-covering cushions for enhanced safety and aesthetics.

A state-of-the-art Virtual Information Desk, allowing travellers to access live flight information, navigate to gates, explore airport outlets and services, chat with a virtual assistant, and generate Wi-Fi coupons, all on a single interactive platform.

With the reopening of T2, airline operations at IGI Airport will now be optimally distributed across terminals. IndiGo will expand its operations across all three terminals.

Terminal 1 will cater to existing domestic operations. IndiGo flights numbered 6E 2000–6E 2999 will operate from Terminal 2, while Terminal 3 will have IndiGo domestic flights 6E 5000–6E 5999 and all international departures.

Air India will shift around 60 domestic flights from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2, while Air India Express will operate all domestic flights from Terminal 1, the airport operator said.
