In its ongoing crackdown on corruption, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) on Friday arrested Patwari Sarabjit Singh, posted at Circle Golward, Village Bala Chak, District Tarn Taran. He was caught red-handed while accepting the second installment of a bribe of ₹25,000 from a complainant, a resident of District Amritsar.

Disclosing this, a spokesperson of the VB said that the complainant wanted to sell his land and, for this purpose, he obtained a copy of the mutation (fard) of his property.

He then discovered that the land was not registered in his name but in the name of another person. The complainant approached Circle Patwari Sarabjit Singh to get the mutation corrected, upon which the Patwari demanded a bribe of ₹1 lakh in exchange for updating the land records.

After negotiation, the deal was settled at ₹30,000. The accused Patwari had already received ₹5,000 as the first installment. Acting on the complainant’s information, a VB team laid a trap and arrested Patwari Sarabjit Singh red-handed while accepting the remaining ₹25,000 as the second installment, in the presence of two official witnesses.

A case under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Police Station Vigilance Bureau, Range Amritsar. He will be produced in the competent court tomorrow. Further investigation is underway.
