Four police officials from Odisha have been awarded the “Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Investigation” for the year 2021, officials said on Thursday.

The four officers are Deputy Superintendent of Police Debendra Kumar Mallick, Inspector Debendra Kumar Biswal, Trupti Ranjan Nayak, and Srikanta Sahu (all inspectors), according to a release by the State’s police headquarters.

This medal was instituted by the union government in 2018, with the objective to promote high professional standards of investigation of crime and to recognize such ‘Excellence in Investigation’ by investigating officers.

DSP Debendra Kumar Mallick has been awarded for his exceptional investigation in a sensational case of rape and subsequent death of a 6-year-old child in the Salipur police station area in Cuttack district. The accused was later sentenced to death by a local court. He joined as SI of Police in the year 1999 and has rendered 22 years of service.

Inspector Debendra Kumar Biswal has been awarded for his exemplary investigation in detecting a blind case of the beheaded dead body of a half-naked woman in Bhubaneswar.

Inspector Trupti RanjanNayak has been awarded for meticulous investigation and conviction in 4 cases involving murder, rape, cruelty, and dacoity in the Kandhamal district.

Similarly, Inspector Srikanta Sahu has been awarded for his meticulous investigation and conviction in 3 murder cases of Keonjhar. All the awardees have used scientific aids and forensic tools during the investigation which has helped in the detection of important cases and earned laurels for Odisha Police.
