A disturbing incident has come to light in one of Bhopal’s most expensive neighborhoods. Police in the Habibganj area have arrested a 75-year-old man who claimed to be a lawyer. He is accused of sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl who lived near him.

The victim is the daughter of a defense officer. On May 3, she went over to a neighbour’s house to play. She was there to visit the granddaughter of the 75-year-old man. Because the man’s own granddaughter called him “Nana” (grandfather), the young victim used the same name for him.

Discovery and medical evidence

The little girl eventually returned to her own home. She told her mother that she was feeling pain in her private parts. When her mother checked her, she found visible scratch marks.

The family did not wait and took the child to a doctor. After medical exam, doctor suspected that child had been sexually abused. The family then went straight to Habibganj Police Station to file formal report. During a session with counselors, the girl explained exactly what happened and identified the neighbour she called “Nana” as person who hurt her.

Arrest and community reaction
Following the report, police took the elderly man into custody. He has since been sent to jail. The news of the arrest has caused a lot of fear and stress for other families living in the upscale colony. Many parents say they are now very worried about the safety of their children, even when they are just playing next door.

Local authorities are trying to calm the public. They have promised that the case will be handled strictly to make sure justice is served.
