In a shocking incident of post-poll violence in West Bengal, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s PA, Chandranath Rath, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Madhyamgram, Barasat on Wednesday.

According to intial reports, Rath reportedly sustained multiple bullet injuries and was rushed to Diversity Nursing Home where doctors declared him dead.

Two more people, including the driver, were also injured in the incident. The attackers reportedly fired on their white Scorpio car from left side where Rath was sitting on the front seat.

Sources told the Statesman that the attackers were following their Scorpio car and when it slowed near Doharia, along Jessore Road, they opened fire.

The assailants, who came on motorcycles, reportedly fired four rounds, with three hiting Chandranath Rath in the chest.

Another individual, including the driver of the vehicle, was also injured in the attack and is currently undergoing treatment at a private nursing facility near Madhyamgram Chowmatha.

The brazen attack, which occurred along a national highway, has triggered widespread panic and heightened political tensions in the region.

Several BJP legislators, including Kaustav Bagchi, Piyush Kanoria, Shankar Ghosh, and Shankar Chattopadhyay, rushed to the nursing home upon receiving news of the incident.

Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is also expected to reach the spot shortly.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, though the identity and motive of the attackers remain unclear.

A large contingent of police forces, along with RAF and central forces, has been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.

The incident has sparked considerable unrest in Madhyamgram, with palpable tension prevailing as authorities attempt to bring the situation under control.
