Anti-begging drive: 6 rescued in C’garh

Six children were rescued during Chandigarh administration’s child beggar rescue drive at traffic light points.An official spokesperson said the six rescued children (three boys and three girls) have been provided with temporary shelter after filing of DDR and medical checkup as per orders of Child Welfare committee, until further enquiry to assess the background of the children and their families.

Out of six children, four have been rescued from the Jama Mazjid Sector 20 and two children from Elante Mall. The children were found selling balloons and other items near main gate of Elante Mall.

The drive was launched by district Child Protection Society under the aegis of district magistrate at traffic light points sector 34/35, Elante Mall, traffic lights of Sector 34/ 33/ 22, and near sector 20 Jama Mazjid, Chandigarh.

The society has been set up under the Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) for implementation of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015 and model rules 2016.

During the campaign a number of children were seen begging, often accompanied by adults. The society will organise drives to crackdown on forced child begging and child labour in the city, a spokesperson said.
