Two cities of Punjab have performed well in the Swachhata Survekshan-2018 (cleanliness survey). An official spokesperson of the state government said on Thursday that Bhadson city in Patiala district has been awarded cleanest city in north India under one Lakh population.

While the Moonak city in Sangrur district has been declared best city in the Citizen’s Feedback in north zone. The north zone comprises Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Delhi, said the spokesperson.

It is worth mentioning that the Union government has announced the results of Swachhata Survekshan -2018 conducted by the Ministry of Health and Urban Affairs. In 2017, Swachhata Sarvekshan was conducted in 434 cities with population one lakh or above across India.

The performance of 16 participatory cities across Punjab was not very encouraging results in the 2017 survey, added the spokesperson. The best performing Mohali city in Punjab was ranked overall 121 in 2017 and performance of some other cities was at the rock bottom.

The Swachhata Sarvekshan 2018 has included three main parameters Service Level Progress, Direct Observation and Citizen Feedback with total marking of 4,000. This year total of 4,203 cities was assessed throughout India, elaborated the spokesperson.

The Punjab Local government minister Navjot Singh Sidhu has extended congratulations to the departmental officers.

The State Mission Director, Swachh Bharat Mission Ajoy Sharma said, Bhadson and Moonak cities have achieved landmark recognition. He hoped that more cities from Punjab will attain higher positions in the north zone once the ranking of all cities will be made publically.

He further said that the positive results indicate a greater role of communities, awareness and sensitivity of residents towards cleanliness and higher standards of sanitation.

He also elaborated about recently launched scheme of Union government ‘Star Rating of Cities’ whereby cities will be competing to attain star rating on the scale of one to seven based on rigorous parameters of sanitation and Solid Waste Management.
