17 people killed, 20 injured as bus overturns in UP’s Mainpuri

Seventeen people lost their lives and twenty others were injured when a bus overturned after hitting a divider in Mainpuri district of  Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday morning.

According to reports, the bus was speeding.

The ill-fated bus carrying 60-70 people was on its way to Farrukhabad from Jaipur in Rajasthan, Mainpuri Additional Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Singh told PTI.

“The bus overturned after hitting a divider in Tirathpur village located almost 25 km from the district headquarters on the Mainpuri-Etawah road, at around 5.30 am, he said.

The injured were rushed to hospital. Three out of the 20 injured persons are believed to be in a critical condition.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered condolences to the bereaved families. He has instructed officials to take all measures possible for appropriate treatment of the injured.

The bus driver has lost his left leg and is currently admitted to a hospital in Saifai, the ASP said. The police are waiting to record his statement.

Police said efforts were under way to ascertain the identity of the victims, which include one woman and 16 men.

The police officer said the private bus was carrying mostly brick kiln labourers and were returning to their native villages.

The number plate of the bus revealed that it was registered in Farrukhabad (UP-76). It was going from Jaipur to Farrukhabad, Singh said and added that further details were awaited.

The ASP also said the number of casualties included those persons who were sleeping on the roof of the bus to escape heat.
