Two arrested in connection with TMC supporter’s murder

The Bankura district police have arrested Hakim Sheikh and Wasim Sheikh from Illambazar in Birbhum district in connection with the murder of a Trinamul Congress (TMC) supporter in Sonamukhi around five months ago.

The victim, TMC supporter Sekandar Khan, was shot dead after miscreants opened fire on him from close range in Sonamukhi, Bankura district. The two accused were produced before the Bishnupur Sub-Divisional Court in Bankura on Friday, with the police seeking custody.

Hakim Sheikh, the prime accused in the case, had been absconding. Acting on a specific tip-off, Sonamukhi police under Bankura district raided a hideout in Illambazar, Birbhum, and arrested both absconding accused.

According to police records, Sekandar Khan had earlier been arrested for allegedly firing at the TMC booth president of Sonamukhi, Nasim Sheikh, on 1 March last year. A few days after his release from jail, while returning home from a hospital in Durgapur, he was shot dead by miscreants.

The district BJP alleged that the incident was the result of factional infighting within the TMC in the Sonamukhi area. Sonamukhi police have already arrested several others in connection with the murder.
