A court in Kolkata on Friday (June 5) remanded Swarup Biswas, brother of former West Bengal minister Aroop Biswas, to police custody till June 18.
Swarup, a figure allegedly feared in Tollygunge, was produced before the Alipore Court, while the Judge rejected his bail plea.

He was taken into custody on Thursday night in connection with an alleged extortion racket operating in the Tollygunge film and television industry, PTI reported.
Cases involving multiple non-bailable offenses have been registered against him based on a complaint filed by a makeup artist. The charges include extortion, molestation, indecent behaviour towards women, criminal intimidation, and violations of the Arms Act.
From technicians to renowned artists, many have accused him of acting like the “unofficial mafia” of Tollygunge, reports said. It is alleged that Swarup has subjected artists in the area to oppression for 15 consecutive years.
Swarup was arrested from his residence in New Alipore. He faces a multitude of charges, ranging from extortion and molestation to attempted murder and illegal possession of a weapon. Immediately after his arrest, locals began protesting outside the police station, while eggs were hurled at Swarup, and his vehicle was vandalised.
Swarup is accused of creating a “den of corruption” within the studio district. Following his arrest, anger against him is mounting among everyone from artists to his neighbours.
