The former MLA from the Trinamul Congress, Tapan Chatterjee was stripped of his security cover on Wednesday after he was denied nomination by the party on Tuesday.

Chatterjee was the MLA, Purbasthali (Uttar). The party has fielded Dr Basundhara Goswami as his substitute and his security cover was withdrawn on Wednesday.

“Those who joined TMC in 1998 get no respect here, instead those came from CPI-M or BJP are valued more,” Chatterjee claimed, adding he’d rather “take a break, maybe retire from politics”, than contesting elsewhere. On losing security cover, Chatterjee said: “I’m an ex-MLA now.” His former party ally (ex-panchayat chief) meanwhile has joined the Aam Jana Unnayan Party. Pankaj Ganguly, district president of AJUP said: “Chatterjee was cooperating with us.”
