Trinamul Congress is gearing up to make Naba Garjan Sabha scheduled to be held on 10 March at the Brigade Parade Ground a grand success.

Trinamul is targeting to bring one lakh supporters from North 24-Parganas. Party’s chairperson Miss Mamata Banerjee and the national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee will be the key speakers. Party supporters from distant districts will be put up at different places like Milan Mela Prangan, Rajdanga stadium, Central Park among other places.

The main purpose of the meeting is to highlight the step-motherly attitude of the Centre. On failing to get any money from the Centre to clear the dues of the workers engaged in 100 days’ work under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme, the state government has started to clear the dues of the workers from its own coffers. The state government had kept budgetary provision for the purpose.

Chief minister took part in a dharna to press for her demand in November 2023 and then again in February 2024. She took a team of MPs to meet Prime Minister NArendra Modi and sought his intervention.

Mr Banerjee has also announced that if the Centre fails to clear the dues, the state government will start setting up houses for the rural poor in batches from May.

Political experts said the enhancement of monthly emolument under Lakshmir Bhandar scheme will help Trinamul Congress to consolidate its base in the rural areas. Miss Banerjee is likely to announce the roadmap which the party will follow in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Trinamul will try to win as many seats as possible in the Lok Sabha poll. In 2019 it won in 22 seats.
