Stepping up its crackdown on counterfeit currency, Malda district police seized fake notes worth Rs 8 lakh and arrested a trafficker from Baishnabnagar on Friday.
The accused, identified as Anarul Sheikh of Bakhrabad under Baishnabnagar police station, was intercepted at Jiban More while allegedly attempting to ferry the counterfeit currency on a motorcycle after sourcing it from areas close to the Bangladesh border.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a special police team alerted Baishnabnagar police, leading to the swift arrest. All the seized notes were in Rs 500 denominations.

Police said an investigation is underway to trace the source and intended destination of the counterfeit currency.
