A fresh crisis appears to be brewing within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) as rebel TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar’s letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar brings a series of eye-popping allegations into the spotlight, including concerns linked to national security and border issues. The developments have raised questions over whether the controversy could deepen trouble for Mamata Banerjee and the TMC party.

Flagging ‘serious matters’ reported in the media concerning national security, public administration, and India’s relations with neighbouring countries, Kakoli called for an examination of the issues, stating in her letter that they could have significant implications if found true. The communication has come at a time when internal differences within the TMC have reportedly intensified between party veterans and the central leadership headed by Mamata Banerjee.

Letter seeks probe into reports involving Rajya Sabha MP Imran

Highlighting concerns related to Rajya Sabha MP Ahmed Hassan Imran, Kakoli wrote, “It has been reported that Shri Imran who was nominated to the Rajya Sabha with the support of the ruling party of the former Government of West Bengal, has allegedly had associations with certain extremist organisations operating in Bangladesh.”

She added, “While these reports remain unverified, they merit appropriate examination by the competent authorities.”

National security concerns raised over alleged links, border issues

The letter also mentioned concerns regarding the alleged non-allotment of land requested by the Indian Army and the Border Security Force (BSF) in strategically sensitive areas along the international border of West Bengal.

The communication specifically referred to the Siliguri Corridor, also known as the “Chicken’s Neck” region, and said the circumstances surrounding such decisions require scrutiny from the perspective of national security.

Call for impartial inquiry

The letter further stated that there have been media reports and public allegations suggesting that funds originating from chit-fund operations in West Bengal may have been diverted or utilised in activities aimed at destabilising democratic governments in neighbouring countries.

“Given the gravity of such allegations, an impartial inquiry appears necessary,” the letter said.

Amit Malviya’s old post on Imran resurfaces

The controversy has also brought attention to an old post by BJP leader Amit Malviya on X from April 2025, in which he had raised questions over Ahmed Hassan Imran’s alleged past associations and political background.

In the post, Malviya wrote, “Who is Ahmed Hassan Imran?” and claimed that he was not only a former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from West Bengal representing the Trinamool Congress but also had alleged links with banned organisations and individuals.

Malviya’s post further alleged that Imran had been associated with the West Bengal chapter of SIMI (Students Islamic Movement of India), an organisation later banned by the Indian government. The post also referred to allegations related to the 2013 Canning-Naliakhali violence, Imran’s association with Bangladeshi newspaper Naya Diganta, and claims regarding his alleged contacts in Bangladesh.

The post also alleged that intelligence reports had raised concerns over Imran’s reported visits to Bangladesh and interactions with certain individuals.
